Last Call Lectures is a series that brings together the wisdom seekers and knowledge cravers of the Fraser Valley for evenings of ideas. Each instalment features a professor or other expert delivering a lecture on a philosophical or psychological topic, followed by time for open discussion, social bonding, and beer.
Your ticket includes access to the main lecture of the night, the social/discussion period afterwards, and one drink ticket.
Hi, I'm Jesse James Carver.
A student of many fields,
former professional magician,
a woodworker, a writer, a podcaster.
When I was nine years old, I became fascinated by optical illusions.
I had a 200-page book full of them, and a book about trick photography.
At ten, I became a magician. My father and I performed shows together for five years.
I'm not a phlosophy PhD.
I'm just a young man who has spent a lot of time reading and listening to philosophy and psychology related literature, and contemplating the nature of human perception.
I listened to Alan Watts growing up, and read 1 & 1/2 of his books.
In June this year, I ran The Future-Proof Creator Summit, an in-person and virtual gathering for entrepreneurs. A hundred people attended here in Abbotsford. Mostly, people who flew in from other countries around the world. There were a dozen headline speakers and about ten people on the team.
The nature of that event, and the philosophically/spiritually profound effect it seems to have had on people, has led to a desire in me for more experiences of this community/network effect that emerges when inquisitive minds engage in communal experiences together.
So, as I work on gathering the actual experts for this series, Last Call Lectures, I thought I‘d go ahead and get the conversation rolling.
I intend to observe, with you, an overview of the history of this question:
What is the relationship between how things seem, and the true reality of being?
At its heart, this lecture is really about the history of the questions of what knowledge is, and how we know what we know — the field philosophers call epistemology.
The questions I will bring up will span much of the breadth of western and eastern philosophy, and will hopefully build fertile soil for our deeper investigations into each of those questions, led by the teachers we invite for upcoming lectures.
Beyond the questions that I will bring up explicitly, I plan to entertain you with something that may confound your very sense of reality.
Don't worry, I'll only talk for about 40 minutes. After that, it's an open social conversation time. Sip a bevvy. Spark some convos. Deconstruct ontology, or something.
